TN to refund Veeru Devgan’s Rs 50 lakh

The Supreme Court has ordered refund of Rs 50 lakh of film producer Veeru Devgan, father of noted Hindi actor Ajay Devgan, who was earlier ordered by the Madras High Court to deposit the amount for protection of forest areas in and around Udhgamandalam in Tamil Nadu.

A bench of Justices C K Thakker and L S Panta said the High Court order was wrong in directing deposit of the particulary after the latter took the view that the senior Devgan had not breached any contract or destroyed the forest land during the shooting of his Hindi film “Raju Chacha.” The film featured Ajay Devgan and his wife Kajol in the lead.

In December, 1999, the High Court ordered deposit of Rs 50 lakh with the court with the direction that the amount would be utilised for protection of the forest land.

This was despite the fact that the High Court while examining the allegation of an NGO, recorded the finding that no damage was caused to the flora and fauna of the forest land due to erection of pre-fabricated sets at the locale.

However, the High Court at the same time noted that the film’s budget was Rs 10 crore and Rs four crore was spent on the sets installed in the forest, directed Devgan to deposit the Rs 50 lakh amount. Devgan had appealed in the apex court against the High Court order.
