Bollywood blockbusting actress Kajol, who made a triumphant return into films with the recent hit Fanaa, has reportedly signed a film opposite husband Ajay Devgan..

Sources close to the actress state that she will appear with husband Ajay Devgan in a comedy romance titled 50:50. The film is to be directed by Aneez Bazmi and produced by Kumar Mangat.

However, Mangat has denied that he has singed both husband and wife, saying that things have still yet to be sorted out. Kajol and Ajay Devgan have not been seen together on-screen since Raju Chacha, which was a box office disaster.

However, the duo did appear in a successful flick earlier, Ishq. Which co-starred Aamir Khan and Kajol, and was a romantic comedy. But their most successful film has to be Pyar To Hona Hi Tha, which was produced by Ajay Devgan.

Bollywood on adulterous path?

The times sure are changing. Gone are the days when most Hindi films would end with a snapshot of a gleeful bride and groom tying the knot in the presence of an extended doting family.

The Mumbai studio-based Hindi film trade is rewriting its script. Movies now begin with what happens the day after a boy meets a girl and they fall in love. In Bollywood of today, mistrust and infidelity are the reigning themes.

So much so that even a 400-years-old tale, “Othello”, penned by William Shakespeare, has found relevance in this week’s release “Omkara” by composer-cum-filmmaker Vishal Bharadwaj.

The film has bowled over critics and has all the makings of raking in big bucks, given its backdrop in India’s most populous state of Uttar Pradesh.

Power performances by Ajay Devgan as a man besieged with mistrust, Kareena Kapoor who essays the role of his wife and Saif Ali Khan who spins a web of lies and deceit along with Naseerudin Shah, Konkana SenSharma and Viveik Oberoi have set Mumbai talking.

The bedroom politics that ensue in this flesh and blood drama in the backdrop of India’s cow-belt have brought mainstream Hindi cinema closest to real life than ever before.

For some time now, Bollywood has been trying desperately to crack the code for a commercially successful though critically sound film. As if on cue, most filmmakers have latched on to films with betrayal and infidelity as the themes that save the day.

What began as plots that pivot on lust and libido in films like “Jism,” “Hawas” or “Murder” where brave new heroines break conventions and shed clothes, are now more realistic depiction of human relations and modern Indian marriages.

Not so long ago, dream merchants had found promiscuity as the favourite excuse to unleash skin show. For some time it seemed audiences were showing remarkable maturity of thought, flexibility of morals and an eagerness to cater to the Satan within. Continue reading ‘Bollywood on adulterous path?’

Filmmaker Karan Johar, who pioneered the art of crafting bubblegum romances, treads the unconventional path with his forthcoming “Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna” (KANK) that releases Aug 11.

The star-studded film, which features Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bhachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Rani Mukerji, deals with extramarital affairs, a banned area in Johar’s films so far.

In his previous films - “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” (KKHH) and “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham” (K3G) - the heroes and heroines were too idealistic to be true. But with KANK, Johar crosses the traditional threshold and enters a more realistic world to look at modern-day relationships.

Johar feels that in today’s world, adultery is more rampant than ever. The film is therefore an endeavour to examine extramarital affairs with an open mind.

“It is a human drama with glam and gloss intact but I have tried to keep it real. It is something which most couples would identify with,” said Johar in an interview.

Basically, KANK is about meeting the right people at a wrong time.

In the film Shah Rukh and Rani are married to two different people and pretend to be happy despite the dissatisfaction brewing below the surface. One fine day they bump into each other and realise they are made for each other.

Shah Rukh describes KANK as a bold film and adds that it is like new wine in an old bottle. He says Johar, who created Rahul - an ideal son, husband, brother and friend - with KKHH and K3G, kills that idealistic image with KANK.

“Rahul is sarcastic, cynical, a failure and not a nice man. All those women, children, daughters, wives and mothers who idolised him as son or husband will change their opinion,” Shah Rukh told CineBlitz.

But he feels that in spite of all the irregular features, KANK will hit the right chord with audiences. Continue reading ‘Johar bids goodbye to past patterns in ‘Kabhi Alvida…’’

Bihar Calling

Gone are the days when only those who failed to make it in Bollywood shifted to regional cinema. It is no longer ‘degrading’ to be a part of regional cinema as far as our Bollywood stars are concerned. Regional cinema, and specifically Bhojpuri cinema is big today and everyone wants to be a part of it. The market is huge and only expanding by the day.

Amitabh Bachchan made big news when he agreed to be a part of Ganga, a Bhojpuri film. That’s not all. The film even has Hema Malini playing his wife. The film is being directed by Deepak Sawant, Bachchan’s make-up man. Good relations take one a long way in the film industry. And it was probably Bachchan’s long association with Sawant that made him give the green signal for the project. This is also the film which saw Nagma playing a significant role.

Ajay Devgan did a movie named Dharti Kahe Pukar Ke along with Bhojpuri superstar, Manoj Tiwari. This movie also starred Rani Mukherjee’s cousin, Sharbani Mukherjee. For Sharbani, this choice came after a spate of unsuccessful Bollywood films like Mitti, Ansh, Aanch, etc. Actor-director Sachin Pilgaonkar who off lately impressed all with his dancing moves in Nach Baliye, too had featured in a hugely successful Bhojpuri film Nadiya Ke Paar way back in 1982. The Hindi remake of this film went out to be a blockbuster hit which we know as Hum Aapke Hain Kaun. Continue reading ‘Bihar Calling’

Othello is set for a Bollywood makeover in which William Shakespeare’s jealous lover is the leader of a gang of outlaws in modern-day India’s political badlands.

Bollywood’s version of the play, slated for release tomorrow, is the story of a gifted chieftain, Omkara, whose jealousy and blind obsession for his lover tears his secure world apart.

Set amidst violent political conflict in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Omkara is director Vishal Bharadwaj’s second tryst with Shakespearean drama after the critically-acclaimed Maqbool, loosely based on Macbeth.

“The appeal of Shakespeare’s stories is that they are humane and timeless which is why they can be set in any social milieu and be relevant to any character,” said Bharadwaj.

Omkara, played by Bollywood star Ajay Devgan, heads a group of outlaws that includes his two close cohorts. When Omkara chooses one of the two as his chief lieutenant, the pride of the other, played by romantic hero Saif Ali Khan, is hurt. Continue reading ‘Othello set for Bollywood debut’

Mr. Fraud

The title of a film should be an indicator of its content. And Abbas-Mustan are extremely choosy when it comes To choosing the title of their films. Be it AGNEEKAAL, BAAZIGAR, TAARZAN or their last release, 36 CHINA TOWN, the director duo have, most of the times, believed in opting for offbeat titles for their films.

Although the talented directors had commenced shooting of Ashtavinayak’s Sanjay Dutt-Ajay Devgan-Bipasha Basu starrer in London, the title of the film was still undecided. But the title has been confirmed and so is the release date. The title is MR. FRAUD and the release is planned for January/February 2007.

But the question is, who among the two is ‘Mr. Fraud’ in the film — Sanju or Ajay?

Vishal Bharadwaj clarifies that his third film “Omkara”, a crime thriller based on Shakespeare’s “Othello”, is not about an underworld kingpin.

Bharadwaj, whose earlier “Maqbool” was an adaptation of “Macbeth”, also says that for the next two years he will stay away from Shakespeare and work on something original.

” ‘Omkara’ isn’t set in the underworld. It is the political mafia of Uttar Pradesh. That’s a completely different world. The Mumbai underworld is an autonomous entity. But the world shown in my ‘Othello’ has never been shown before,” said Bharadwaj, adding that the definition of crime in Uttar Pradesh is very different from the Mumbai underworld.

“I am from Meerut in Uttar Pradesh. So I know the world that my characters in my ‘Othello’ inhabit. Even I used to carry a knife in college in Meerut. Street fights are common over there. Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’ had to be set in a violent milieu. Likewise my ‘Omkara’,” Bharadwaj told IANS.

Omkara . Dolly. Langda. Keshu. Billo Chaman Bahar. Bhaisahab and Vishal Bharadwaj. Add the name of scriptwriter William Shakespeare. And you have the Desi version of the classic tragedy Othello. ‘Omkara’ is easily the most awaited film.

As the D-Day: 28th July is fast approaching, the decibel levels of expectations are growing higher and higher. The film industry is buzzing with the extraordinary performances by lead pair Ajay Devgan and Kareena Kapoor, while the whole starcast is vouching for Saif Ali Khan’s devilish act worthy of many an award.

The smoldering-with-magic music by Vishal himself is being loved by all. Kareena Kapoor and Ajay Devgan shot a four-minute long erotic lovemaking scene for Vishal Bhardwaj’s forthcoming ‘Omkara’. As per reports, the scene has been incorporated as a part of a song titled ‘O Sathi Re’.

“The scene is too erotic, however has been shot very aesthetically,” said a source.
Initially Kareena was a bit hesitant doing the scene, however after the film’s director Bhardwaj reassured her repeatedly that the scene would be shot very tastefully, Kareena agreed to do the scene. Kareena plays a Brahmin girl who leaves her family for Ajay, a half-Brahmin and the chieftain of outlaws. ‘Omkara’ is scheduled to release on this week.
