With Ajay Devgan recently accused Shah Rukh-Karan combo of sabotaging the Vishal Bhardwaj’s latest release by deciding to release ‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’ soon after the release of ‘Omkara’, it is proved that the Shah Rukh-Ajay Devgan cold war is not over.

Recently Ajay Devgan said in an interview that, in spite of receiving high critical appreciation, ‘Omkara’ couldn’t do well at the box office because a well-known high profile banner released their big film soon after ‘Omkara’. Ajay’s subtle indirect indication hinted at the Shah Rukh starrer KANK.

Shah Rukh and Ajay have never got along very well. After marriage, Ajay has even stopped wife Kajol from doing film with Shah Rukh. Now it seems the cold war revives as Shah Rukh Khan, who was quiet, recently opened his mouth against Ajay. Continue reading ‘Shah Rukh-Ajay Devgan war revives!’

Ajay, Sanjay team up for Bheed

Director Milan Luthria of Taxi No 9211 has teamed up with Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgan for his action thriller Bheed, which he says is inspired by a true incident.

“The film is based on a true story. It is about four characters - Sanjay Dutt is an outlaw and Ajay Devgan is a cop chasing him down. And there are two women also. But we haven’t finalised any actress yet,” said Luthria, who is planning to shoot the film in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

“The film will have a rugged look and be shot in hazardous terrain,” said Luthria. The film will be made under the banner of Ajanta Arts, started by Sunil Dutt. Continue reading ‘Ajay, Sanjay team up for Bheed’

Is Ajay delaying Sholay?

Ram Gopal Varma was all set to wield the megaphone for his grand remake of Ramesh Sippy’s 1975 blockbuster Sholay a few days ago.

But now, the recent buzz doing the rounds is that Varma’s grand remake, Ram Gopal Varma Ke Sholay has encountered another roadblock. Work has come to a standstill, with the film being delayed again, by more than a month.

The reason Ajay Devgan’s dissatisfaction with the script. Devgan, on his part, is known to be a perfectionist who takes a keen interest in every aspect of his film. And this one is no different. Continue reading ‘Is Ajay delaying Sholay?’

Filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi is planning to make a film, where Ajay Devgan will be playing a role of film star. So, Santoshi has taken to having a cameraman follow Ajay everywhere her goes, even to the sets of his other films. He was getting ready by making clips of the star in real life. It seems a brilliant strategy!

Rumours have been abuzz that actor Ajay Devgan has been signed to play the role of Lord Ram in Rajkumar Santoshi ’s film ‘Ramayana’. However, there is no truth to such grapevine as Santoshi has denied that Devgan has been signed for the project. The film, presently in the scripting stages, will be the first movie to be produced under the newly launched production house (Raj Kumar Santoshi Films Pvt Ltd) by Santoshi himself.

“It will be the biggest and most spectacular version of the epic,” Santoshi is quoted as saying about the project. While gossip has been going around that either Devgan or Hrithik Roshan will play the eponymous role of Lord Ram, Santoshi says no actor has yet been finalized.

But Santoshi does make it clear that any actor who signs for the role would have to understand the importance and seriousness of it. At least during the time when the film is in the making and before it releases, the actor would have to be cautious about his public conduct. Continue reading ‘Who’s best suited to play Lord Ram?’

The Bard… & Bollywood

Almost everywhere I’ve been in the last couple of weeks, people have asked searching questions about Omkara. Is it any good? Does it really have so much bad language that you can’t take kids? And so on.

Vishal Bharadwaj, lyricist and director, is finally in the limelight. It may not be the kind of buzz that a Yash Chopra or a Karan Johar film generates, but it’s there. The reason for this sudden upsurge in public interest is clear: this is the first time Bharadwaj has worked with major league stars. Ajay Devgan, Kareena Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, even Bipasha Basu, have lifted the profile of the film and its director. Suddenly, the man who made Makdee, Maqbool, and the unreleased Blue Umbrella, has made an enviable entry into drawing room conversations.

Two weeks after its release, Omkara is being treated by the trade with mixed feelings. In Mumbai, the first week collections were a not-so-great 60 per cent; in Uttar Pradesh, where the film is set, theatres were barely full; and in Delhi, theatres and multiplexes are still getting ‘decent’ crowds. According to a PVR spokesperson, it has done quite well in Punjab, but is far from being blockbuster material. Continue reading ‘The Bard… & Bollywood’

Ajay Devgan’s repertoire boasts of a great variety of roles. But we aren’t yet sure whether we’ll see Ajay playing Ram in the near future. Rubbishing a report carried by a newspaper about Devgan being signed for the coveted role of Ram in his film, director Raj Santoshi laughs, “Just because Ajay and I work together extensively and Ajay has done many films with me from Bhagat Singh to Lajja, Ajay as Ram is a safe and intelligent guess. But I haven’t spoken to Ajay or any star about playing Ram,” he says.

Raj Kumar Santoshi has decided to take a leap in his career and is launching his own production house called Raj Kumar Santoshi Films Pvt Ltd. “My first independent production will be Ramayan. I can’t think of a more auspicious beginning for my production house,” says the director.

“Work is on full-time on the scripting and pre-production details of Ramayan. It will be the biggest and most spectacular version of the epic,” says director. The director says he’d love to cast an established superstar in the eponymous role. “But the actor I cast will have to work hard on his looks, his body language and everything. The image isn’t so important. I can’t order my actor to live in a particular way just to live up the Ramayan’s ideals. But yes, I think any actor who plays Rama in my production would automatically realise the importance of what he’s doing,” he says.
